INDEX 196

It has been said,

"A rose by any other name would smell as sweet." Yet
when we call Southwestern "Camelot," visions of ivory
towers and fairy tales are conjured up.

Calling it "The Country Club" brings to
mind a leisurely party atmosphere.

However, it takes littie imagination to note the
similarities between attending S.U. and playing a game-
the elements of risk, strategy, and separation from the
real world are common to both.

Faced by changing rules and fortunes, they have to

BROWN CHALLENGE
CALLS FOR CASH

Question: What's brown on the outside, green on the
inside and awfully confusing sometimes?

Answer: The Brown Challenge.

In the year since the Brown Foundation, Inc. of
Houston unveiled the 10-year matching funds program
for Southwestern University, the plan has become
known as the Brown Challenge and has occupied a
central place in the school's fund-raising efforts.

Different incentives and matching formulas are offered
for various contributors to the challenge, with seperate
"rules" for new gifts, for increased gifts and for gifts
from certain class years.

Fortunately, at least one person can keep the formulas
straight. Named last year as the director of the Brown
Challenge, Mr. Marc Raney reported that the
program's 1976 goal was met and exceeded.

Students got into the act, too, giving over $900 in the
student respinse to the Brown Challenge. And for the
next several years, the students as well as the
University's other constituancies can expect to be kept
aware of the needs of the Brown Challenge, the
program which has been hailed as a "breakthrough"
and as a key to future improvement of Southwestern.

Marc Raney, Director of the Brown Challenge, explains
the program's main points.

HIP: A STAR IS BORN-i

In the fall of 1976, Southwestern's freshman students were

offered a new program: Humanities in Practice (Praxis, if

you prefer.) The program was designed and initiated by a

committee consisting of Dr. Martha Allen, Dr. Karen Fiser,

Dr. Bob Hoffert, and Dr. Farley Snell. The committee also

obtained a $49,924 grant from the National Endowment for
the Humanities, making the program possible.

The program was taught by Dr. Martha Allen, Dr. Karen

Fiser, Dr. Jack Harris, Dr. Walter Herbert, Dr. Ellsworth

Peterson, and Dr. Farley Snell. Other faculty members, as

well as outside individuals, participated in the HIP program

in their fields of specialization. According to Dr. Allen, the

program was designed to stimulate intellectual self-reliance,

theoretical complexity, aesthetic sensitivity, curricular and

existential integrations, and basic skills development.

By participating in the HIP program, students obtained

eighteen semester hours of credit, half in the fall semester

and half in the spring semester. In the fall, they received

three hours credit in each of three areas — English

Composition, Literature, and Philosophy. In the spring they

were credited with three hours of American History and six

hours chosen from Religion, Fine Arts, and Humanities.

In the fall, students undertook a general study of

Humanities, and in the spring, applied what they learned to

the study of a specific time and place: Chicago in the years

between 1885 and 1915. Students completed projects,

including musical and dramatic programs characteristic of

those found in Chicago at the turn of the century. To top it

off, students were offered a train trip to Chicago to visit the

historical locales and architectural works they had

encountered in their studies.

Participating students and faculty members alike agree that

the innovative HIP program was a success and provided

valuable experiences for all involved.

NEW GYM

In 1972, the Sid W. Richardson Foundation gave
Southwestern a gift of $1 million. The money was to
be used in any manner desired — as long as it were
used to build a new gymnasium.

Thus was born the Sid W. Richardson Physical
Education Center. By the time the building was
completed, it cost around $2.1 million. Many students
and faculty members felt the funds spent on the new
building's construction could have been used more
advantageously, but, like it or not, the new gym is an
undeniable reality.

The new Center was officially opened on Sept. 25 amid
much excitement. Containing a large gymnasium, a
natatorium. racquet - and handball courts, offices,
training rooms and seminar rooms, it is three times
the size of the older Jim West Gymnasium. Many
students enjoyed using the new facility, but were
disappointed to find it locked many times when it was
supposed to be open — too little funding was available
to keep it open on a regular basis.

RESTORATION

Blend Cullen and Birdwell, add a dash of restoration
and a pinch of renovation, mix everything up
completely, and the result is the MAD building.

First, in 1975, a grant from the Birdwell Foundation
allowed temporary renovation of Mood Hall.

Then at the beginning of 1976, the occupants of the
Administration Building took up residence in Mood Hall,
and thus was forged the MAD Building.

Meanwhile the old Ad Building underwent complete
restoration and renovation through funds from the
Cullen Foundation, with work completed in the
summer of 1977.

Now it's Mood's turn again with permanent restoration
underway as almost all the occupants moved to the Ad
Building and to Ruter.

ALMOST all the occupants. Mood Man become Ruter
Man or even — perish the thought — Ad Man? Never.

COMMONS

Sniff-sniff.

"Skunk die?"

"Nope. Supper."

Yes, Gastrodome, three times daily you are the object
of pilgrimage by the denizens of the campus
community who count on you for sustenance.

But dining in the commons is more than just eating.
The commons is fun . . .

The salad bar is fun. "It's a crowd-pleaser," beamed
director Alan Jones at Food Service Committee
meetings. Yep. What crowd isn't pleased by brown
lettuce and rancid cottage cheese?

The guessing games are fun. Will it be bird bodies or
mystery meat? Or maybe even the famous Killer
Burrito? Even in the line, there are guessing games to
play. What's this on my fork? Does that green
substance on my plate have a name? Will it crawl off
the plate by itself?

The psuedo-security games are the most fun of all.
Off-campus students in the Commons? Ridiculous.
They'd rush right up to that new salad bar and run off
with hundreds of dollars worth of brown lettuce and
rancid . . . you know the rest.

But somehow, Gastrodome, you kept us from starving
for another year. Better luck next time.

IT WAS AN ELECTION YEAR

1976 was an election year. As Fall progressed, the
trees shed their leaves as usual, but buttons bloomed
on lapels, posters shot up around campus, mail boxes
sprouted printed propaganda, and car bumpers grew
stickers. It was impossible to avoid knowing the polls
would soon by open.

Southwestern's campus was visited by political figures
and their backers from local, state, and national
offices. Some came to campaign. Others, not up for
re-election, spoke on various topics and answered —
or evaded — questions from students.

Beer joints in Georgetown? Not on your life!

It was the election we had all been waiting for.

"Hey, if we win the wet/dry election next Saturday,
we won't have to go all the way to Round Rock any
more!"

Tee-hee.

Good old Georgetown, bastion of temperance, allowing
the likes of the Dew-Drop Inn within its corporate
limits? Foolish dreamer.

There was a glimmer of possibility, on that Saturday in
February, that change was at hand and that the sale
of (gasp) alcoholic beer and fermented wine would be
approved by the voters of Justice Precinct 1.

But it didn't happen that way, whether it be because
of heavy publicity by the "drys," inaction during pre-
election times by the "wets," or even the wording of
the proposition itself, which did not differentiate
between sales for on- or off-premises consumption.

For whatever reasons, the road to Round Rock is
traveled heavily by SU students, and may continue to
be for some time to come.

UNION

From camping in Big Bend National Park to eating
jalapenos in the SUB basement, the members of Union
committees were there to sponsor programs designed
to appeal to a broad audience among the
Southwestern student body.

Starting the year with a horror film series, IDEAS AND
ISSUES committee went on to bring speakers such as
Judge Fite of Dallas, American atheist Dr. Malyn
Murray O'Hair and Male liberationist Warren Farrell.

COFFEEHOUSE committee, headquartered in the
Sawdust Cafe in the SUB, showcased student talent in
musical evenings, as well as playing host to root beer
chugging/jalapeno eating/water pistol fighting
contests, a visiting magician and the Not Ready for a
Small Religious College Players in "Tuesday Night
Live".

Edification is the reason for the existence of the FREE
UNIVERSITY committee, and course offerings this year
included backgammon, bridge, Chinese cooking, self-
defense, kicker dancing and sign language, among
others.

Almost anything could come from SPOT PROGRAMS
committee, and some of its "Productions" were a
swordfight during registration, music to dine by in the
commons, Novemberfest, and halftime productions at
basketball games.

The providers of entertainment on campus were,
logically enough, member of the ENTERTAINMENT
committee, who booked moovies throughout the year.
Among the films the committee sponsored were
"Blume in Love," "Fritz the Cat," "Mame," and
"Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf."

OUTDOOR RECREATION Committee took its members
on a series of adventures designed to allow
opportunities to explore the Texas wilderness.

Officially in the hands of Director of Student Activities
Jaime Gray, Union President Roger Neely and vice-
president Adele Spencer, Union programming is aimed
toward spanning a broad range of interests to offer
enlightenment, diversion and recreation to all
members of the SU community who choose to
partake.

INTERNATIONAL HOUSE

A Diez y Seis celebration, a Chinese new year's
festival, a concert of American folk singing — all were
a part of the programming at the International House
this year.

Founded in 1974, the "I House" provided its third year
of exploration and learning experiences for both its
residents and the campus community as a whole.
Through its programs, I House residents attempted to
foster a better understanding of and a better
appreciation of differing cultures. Housing director
Bonnie Buckley and program directors Sue and
Ellsworth Peterson worked with students to produce
such programs as those already mentioned as well as
a Hanukkah celebration, screening of "The Blue
Angel," a discussion of living in Europe, and slide
shows on Chile, Venezuela, Bolivia, Korea, India, and
the USSR.

NEW FACILITIES ENHANCE ATHLETICS

Opened and formally dedicated in September, the $2.1 million
Sid W. Richardson Physical Education Center provided a spacious
new home for Pirate athletes. Including a natatorium, handball
and racquetball courts, classroom and office space in addition
to the gymnasium area, the Center quickly became the hub of
campus sports activities.

Baseball players also got a new "home" this year, as a baseball
field was constructed on the old ninth hole of the golf course.

Conclusion?

There can be no real conclusions.

For though words on paper appear static,

they burn, decay, dissolve.

The world goes on faster than we can imagine,

thumbing its nose at our mortality.

As this book is primarily concerned with the past,

perhaps it would be best to end it with the

Russian proverb which states:

"Dwell on the past and you'll lose an eye.

Forget the past and you'll lose both eyes."
